Isabella was a strong believer in the power of prayer. She once wrote:
Prayer is the pulse of the renewed soul; and the constancy of its beat is the test and measure of the spiritual life.
One of Isabella Alden’s talents was creating characters who discovered for themselves the power of prayer in their lives. Some of her characters turned to prayer in times of trouble or to heal a loved one of illness; other characters spoke to God as naturally and as often as they would speak to a close friend or family member.
As wealthy Miss Mary Brown discovered in The Browns at Mount Hermon:
“I would give—oh, what would I not give!—to be able to talk to God as those girls did this afternoon, with the assurance which they evidently had that he heard and cared!”
In her own life Isabella knew the power of prayer. It was through the prayers of her sister Marcia that Isabella chose Christ as her Saviour (read more about that here).
As a busy author and public speaker, Isabella began each day with prayer “to ask God’s help and blessing on the work to be done.” (You can read about that here.)
And in her journal she regularly wrote down prayer requests, notes about sermons, favorite Bible verses, and lessons learned.

Prayer is such a blessing. Yes, Pansy’s books are such an encouragement and reminder to pray!
The prayer journaling set is so so beautiful! Yes I love how Isabella’s books are filled with prayer and Gods work in the everyday lives of the characters.
I also rely so very heavily on prayer each day. I have my own journal listing all of my prayers answered, and I love seeing it increase!

I love The Browns at Mount Hermon! And I love to journal.
Prayer is such a difficult thing and yet an easy thing to do. More and more I am learning that prayer IS my relationship with God. It is my life with Him.
We have a God that is so willing and able to answer prayer! “Ask and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.”
Prayer is so powerful! I just read that Billy Graham’s crusades had 8,000 women praying for them!
Prayer seems so easy and of course is so available. But it is work too, so I push it off more than I would like to acknowledge. Prayers of praise and Thanksgiving are so much easier than the prayers against powers of darkness. Isabella Alden has helped me so much. I wish all of her works could be reprinted.
One of the things I most admire in Isabella’s books is how easily and naturally many of her characters pray. I really admire how Isabella lived her faith. There’s another writer who I enjoy, who was a minister’s wife for many years, but you couldn’t tell it through her writing.
